We proudly announce the winners of the Sarphati Sanitation Awards 2015!

This afternoon at the Opening Ceremony of the Amsterdam International Water Week at the RAI Amsterdam, the Mayor of Amsterdam Mr. Eberhard van der Laan awarded the two winners of the Sarphati Sanitation Awards 2015. They both received a cheque and a statue of the Dutch artist Marte Röling for their outstanding performances in the field of sanitation:

Dr Kamal Kar, Founder of the CLTS Foundation is the undisputable winner of the Sarphati Sanitation Award for Lifetime Achievement. He accepted the cheque of € 35.000,- because his Community Led Total Sanitation approach has positively influenced the behavior of millions of people. Thousands of communities have become Open Defecation Free, and in many countries, governments have adopted the CLTS approach to stimulate people to build their own toilets, and facilitate the private sector to supply adequate sanitation solutions. The major impact of this approach has been to leave behind the unsuccessful practice of building toilets with subsidies and replace them by building knowledge and creating awareness on the health effects of open defecation for the individual and for the surrounding community.

Sarphati Sanitation Award 2015 for Young Entrepreneurs
The Sarphati Jury 2015 chose four promising Sanitation Business Initiatives to present themselves during the Amsterdam International Water Week, to inspire others to offer sanitation services for people at the Base of the Pyramid. Safi Sana was unanimously chosen as winner of the Sarphati Sanititation Award 2015 for Young Entrepreneurs. The organization from Ghana was selected by the Jury as an outstanding example of how the philosophy of Dr Sarphati is put into practice in developing countries by creating value from human waste for enriched soils and vegetable production, and renewable energy from biogas. Safi Sana is set up as a scalable model, designed as a blueprint for replication. Mr. Aart van den Beukel, Managing Director of Safi Sana, accepted the cheque of € 25.000,-.

All nominees will present their cases during the Workshop 'Sarphati Awards & New Finance Models for Urban Sanitation' tomorrow afternoon at the RAI Amsterdam.
